Allow us to introduce Laura Gilbert, CPC, CIC, CPMA, CRC, director of Compliance and Audit Services with UofL Health – Compliance, Risk & Audit Services.
Laura is an American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) approved instructor and has been a part of the UofL Health team for 13 years. In her current role, she manages a team of auditor educators who ensure compliance of regulations and guidelines for medical documentation and demonstrate best documentation practices and coding opportunities. She also oversees educational resources on UofL Health coding policies for new providers, residents and coders.
Laura works to help providers see the value of their services. “Many providers undervalue their services when it comes to coding and billing” Laura explained. “By providing documentation education, we can provide a better picture of the services that are truly and compliantly being performed and reported.”
One of Laura’s goals for UofL Health is to encourage provider coding education. She hopes to assist providers in understanding medical coding, which isn’t something they learn in their extensive schooling.
“I would love to be able to provide a comprehensive coding and documentation program for our providers, and really anyone that wants to learn,” Laura said. “Our providers go to school to treat patients, yet they are tasked with medical coding which is not taught in most medical schools.”
Laura enjoys working for an organization that values diversity and culture and loves hearing the unique stories, traditions and backgrounds of her co-workers. She chooses to live out the organization’s mission by focusing her attention to serve others and the community around her.
One thing you may not know about Laura is she is from New York. Her go-to fun-fact is quite a lucky story. After her high school graduation, she and her friends traveled to Atlantic City, where she won a great sum of money playing blackjack. She took her winnings and traveled abroad to Germany, Spain, France and Australia.
When it comes to the most important meal of the day, Laura is a lover of all breakfast foods, but specifically her husband’s pancakes. Out of all the food in the world, her all-time favorite will always be a crisp bowl of cereal.
Laura considers herself a “forever student” and enjoys taking classes or reading textbooks to learn something new. For fun, she enjoys reading mysteries and is always down to watch an old murder mystery show on television. Her current favorites are Matlock and Murder, She Wrote. You can count on her for a great whodunnit recommendation!
One skill Laura is currently trying to learn is how to best use her Cricut crafting tool. If you see Laura out and about, be sure to introduce yourself and give her your favorite Cricut tips and tricks. She would love to get to know you!
