Meet Joel Payne, BSN, RN, PCCN, CRNI, the system manager for vascular access for UofL Health – UofL Hospital, UofL Health – Jewish Hospital and UofL Health – Mary & Elizabeth Hospital. Joel has been part of our organization since 2013 and has loved watching it grow and evolve.
In his role, Joel manages UofL Health’s vascular access specialist team (VAST), which is a team of specially trained nurses that provide vascular access planning and device placement services for our patients. Recently, Joel has helped establish a new VAST department at UofL Health – Mary & Elizabeth Hospital.
His favorite part about working for UofL Health is our organization’s size and capability, which attracts a wide array of complex patient needs. He finds meeting the vascular access needs of patients in challenging circumstances incredibly rewarding. Joel also enjoys working with team members throughout the system to improve vascular access skills.
“My goal for UofL Health is to fully align vascular access policies and procedures with best practices, ensuring positive outcomes and experiences for our patients,” Joel said.
He plans to make this happen by ensuring our care is consistent with standards of infusion and vascular access, and through supporting initiatives to improve vascular access skills. Joel is committed to providing the highest levels of care for his patients and resources for his team members to ensure compassionate, patient-centered care.
Teaching ultrasound guided Peripheral IV classes has been the most memorable experience of his career. He enjoys seeing team members develop a difficult skill that will transform the service they can provide our patients. Joel believes supporting this class improves patient care and provides staff with an opportunity to grow and develop.
In his free time, Joel enjoys hiking and being outdoors. This summer he hopes to spend his days gardening and growing a wide selection of hot peppers. Looking for a great, homemade hot sauce? Joel proudly claims that as his specialty.
Joel is a lifetime sports fan and a proud member of Big Blue Nation. When he is not playing baseball, soccer or basketball with his wife and three kids, he’s likely cheering on his alma mater, the University of Kentucky – go Cats!
If you catch see Joel around, be sure to say “hello” and ask him what else he’s growing in his garden this summer. He would love to get to know you!
