Ashley Buckler, RD, CDCES, is an outpatient dietitian and certified diabetes care and education specialist with the UofL Health – Diabetes and Nutrition Care Program. She has worked at UofL Health for a little more than two years and cares for patients at UofL Health – Mary & Elizabeth Hospital, UofL Health – Medical Center East and UofL Health – Medical Center Northeast.
As a dietitian, Ashley sees patients on an outpatient basis and provides medical nutrition therapy and diabetes self-management education and training. Her role is crucial in aiding the health and well-being of community members, as well as raising awareness for the risks of diabetes and heart disease.
Ashley’s favorite thing about UofL Health is being a part of a team of dietitians with such a diverse skill set.
“We all have our own passions and assets which makes for a great overall team,” Ashley said. “Our roles as educators and counselors provide community members with the tools and resources they need to be empowered to manage their health.”
When asked what her goal is for UofL Health, Ashley hopes UofL Health can continue to grow its community outreach efforts and solidify its position as a leading health organization.
Ashley is originally from Pickerington, Ohio, and attended The Ohio State University where she received her bachelor’s in human nutrition-dietetics. She then completed her dietetic internship through UK HealthCare.
When not at work, you can catch Ashley reading, hiking with her pup or watching “The Office” on repeat. In the winter, she enjoys snowboarding. In the summer, she trades out her snowboard for a longboard, a variation of a skateboard. She also enjoys taking care of her indoor houseplants and taking advantage of the brewery scene.
Do you know multiple languages? You could teach Ashley over her favorite breakfast meal of homemade quiche with a mimosa on the side.
“I would love to be bilingual! I set a goal to learn basic Spanish this year,” Ashley explained. “I attend weekly Spanish classes and, it has been difficult, but fun!”
One piece of advice she always shares with her patients is, when making changes or adjustments to your lifestyle, you don’t need to be extreme, just consistent.
If you see Ashley out and about, be sure to say “hello” and ask her about her favorite hiking spot. She would love to get to know you!
