Sunita Kasliwal, M.D., MBA, is the chief medical information officer (CMIO) for UofL Health. Through her role, Dr. Kasliwal acts as a liaison between the UofL Health – Information Technology team and frontline clinical team members. Her responsibilities include translating the electronic medical record (EMR) needs of the physicians and setting up IT systems to support and execute those needs in an efficient and optimal way. She ultimately helps both physicians and patients by improving the quality of care, which contributes to achieving health equity and reducing health disparities in communities.
Part of the chief medical information officer’s role is to lead the digital transformation of health care by using innovative technologies. Dr. Kasliwal will aid in ensuring these digital leaps are aligned with the strategic business goals of the organization.
“My background as a physician means I will act on behalf of advancing care for patients,” Dr. Kasliwal said. “The digital changes and optimization we make will ultimately increase access to care and help patients make health care decisions.”
Dr. Kasliwal was attracted to UofL Health because of the size of the organization and the supportive culture of the team. Coming from New York state, Dr. Kasliwal is also excited about the pace and weather change of living in Kentucky.
“The combination of two different EMR systems is a unique opportunity to utilize my knowledge of both systems and provide knowledge to the organization,” Dr. Kasliwal explained.
Dr. Kasliwal’s main objective is to lessen physician burnout while also enhancing patient care quality. To do this, Dr. Kasliwal makes use of effective workflows and adheres to stringent regulatory requirements.
You might be surprised to learn that Dr. Kasliwal has hiked Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest free-standing mountain in the world and the highest mountain in Africa. In addition to hiking, Dr. Kasliwal also enjoys painting and gardening, and spending time with her son and daughter.
One of Dr. Kasliwal’s all-time favorite meals is Thai red coconut curry. It’s spicy, but she could eat it almost every day.
A piece of inspiration that Dr. Kasliwal has carried with her is: “Do right and all else will follow.” This has served her well throughout her professional and personal experiences.
