Haily Smith, RN, BSN, CCRN, is the burn educator and resource nurse in the UofL Health – UofL Hospital – Burn Center. She has been with UofL Health for a little more than 10 years.
Haily found UofL Health and the Burn Center through her college and career path. She knew she wanted to work for a health care organization that cared for a variety of patients – including those coming in from the helipad.
“I wanted to work at a hospital that first responders wanted to fly patients into, not out of,” Haily said.
Haily’s need to complete capstone hours led her to the Burn Center at UofL Hospital. She loved working on the unit and knew UofL Hospital checked most of her boxes for her career choice.
In her role, Haily helps from the Emergency Department (ED) to the Burn Center with burn patient care and follow-ups. This includes throughput, dressing changes, gathering supplies for discharge and setting up follow-up appointments. She also educates new nurses in the center and in the ED through burn orientation classes and advanced burn life support.
Did you know the Burn Center is in the process of becoming a verified burn center? As part of Haily’s role, she is working to help the center earn verification and add to UofL Health’s expansive accreditations and verifications.
Haily’s role recently expanded to add community outreach and teaching to her skillset. She looks forward to diving deeper and helping make an impact within the burn community.
If you were to ask Haily what her favorite part of UofL Health was, she would quickly say “the people!”
“I absolutely love the people that I work with,” Haily said. “You will not find a better team of nurses and burn techs! Each day, they come into the unit or the ED ready to take on whatever comes their way.”
Haily lives out our mission by giving compassionate and consistent care from the ED to the Burn Center. Her role allows her to transform the way her and her team care for patients by working as a team and learning and implementing best practices for burn patients.
Outside of the Burn Center, the Milford, Ohio, native enjoys listening to murder or crime-type podcasts and eating chili cheese coneys from Skyline Chili. She could probably eat them every day for the rest of her life and never grow tired of them.
If you go shopping with Haily, she might want to peruse the children’s shoe aisle for a new pair of kicks. She can wear a 2.5 in children’s shoes – which saves her more money to buy more shoes!
