Emily E. Volk, M.D., MBA, FCAP, has been with UofL Health since March 2023. She is the vice president of system pathology and laboratories for UofL Health. In this role, Dr. Volk oversees the operations of pathology and laboratories across UofL Health. She has the privilege of working with clinical laboratory scientists, pathologists and clinical and operational leaders across the organization.
Dr. Volk’s role is critical in ensuring that our clinical laboratories are operating smoothly and have the tools and resources they need to succeed.
“Getting an accurate diagnosis and a reliable test result is the foundation of everything we do in medicine,” Dr. Volk explained. “Having a well-run clinical laboratory has a widespread impact on the organization, both on the inpatient and outpatient side. The pathology and laboratory operations are critical to just about every service line.”
Even though Dr. Volk is new to the Power of U, she has enjoyed getting to know her fellow team members and watching how our academic health care system has flourished with our partnership with University of Louisville.
“One of my favorite things about UofL Health is the combination of tremendous medical and scientific expertise wrapped up in lots of heart from our team members,” Dr. Volk said.
Dr. Volk grew up in the Kansas City metro area and attended the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Medicine. One fun fact about Dr. Volk is that she used to front a pop cover band during her residency at the Cleveland Clinic called “Skin and Bones.” She is also the president of the College of American Pathologists, an organization dedicated to continuous improvement and excellence in the field of pathology and laboratory medicine.
One of Dr. Volk’s favorite places to grab a bite is District 6 in St. Matthews. When she goes, there’s no doubt that she’ll get the red curry chicken.
Are you planning to take any vacations soon? Ask Dr. Volk about her travels. She enjoys taking trips along with playing the piano. She also enjoys listening to podcasts in her free time and is currently listening to “Smartless.”
If you ever see Dr. Volk driving around Louisville, she might be listening to “Walking After Midnight” by Patsy Cline. She knows all the words and loves singing along to the classic country hit.
If you see Dr. Volk out and about, make sure to say “Hi,” and ask about her favorite book or current T.V. show she’s watching. She would love to chat with you!
