What if I need medical attention?

House managers, your unit supervisor or practice manager will help you immediately following an event. If you require additional care after an incident, Workers’ Compensation team can help you navigate receiving care and taking the time off you need.

What if I need someone to talk to? 

There are several ways to connect. Our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) offers counseling at no cost to UofL Health team members. Additionally, you can also access on-site counseling and debriefing services through Employee Support and Wellness, and Code Lavender (only at UofL Hospital, Brown Cancer Center, Jewish Hospital and Peace Hospital). Please reach out to your manager or Employee Support and Wellness for further information. You can also use the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling 988.

Will I be paid for days missed as a result of this event? 

Please work with your immediate supervisor/manager and Workers’ Compensation for specific details.

 


Employee Assault Event Checklist

The charge nurse or team members should begin by removing the assaulted employee from the violent incident/patient care area and move to a secure location.

Department Leader/Unit Manager/Charge Nurse/Practice Manager

  1. Charge nurse, department leader or practice manager should facilitate handoff of the team member’s patient care responsibilities.
  2. Charge nurse, department leader or practice manager should contact the following departments*:
    • House supervisor
    • Onsite Security (if applicable for your location) or police if you want to file charges
    • Unit Manager

* The order in which the above individuals are contacted may vary depending on the situation. During the evening hours, contacting the house supervisor is the fastest way to get all related teams notified at once.

House Supervisor/Unit Manager

  1. Facilitate the team member receives medical care related to the assault.
  2. House supervisor shall determine appropriate timing based on the severity of injury to notify the administrator on call and risk management.
  3. Determine if calling a Code Lavender (only at UofL Hospital, Brown Cancer Center, Jewish Hospital and Peace Hospital) for staff, unit or department is applicable.
  4. Determine if Chaplaincy Services are needed. Call the operator to request Chaplaincy Services.
  5. Contact Safe Services (SANE) to document the assault. Call 502-562-8008, option #3.
  6. Ask the team member if they would like to press charges. If yes, contact Security to notify law enforcement. Contact the operator to reach Security.
  7. Provide the team member with the post-assault resource file.
  8. Enter the event in RL Solutions. Be sure to detail the event and the steps taken.
  9. If this injury requires hospitalization of the team member, please call the director of OSHA at 502-939-1687.

This checklist is designed to help team members in the event of an assault on an employee by a non-employee (visitor or patient). This is not intended to replace system policy or support items following an event but should be used to assist team members during and immediately after an assault.

Once completed, the house supervisor will provide this information to Employee Health.
