Kentucky Employers’ Mutual Insurance (KEMI) recognized 24 Kentucky organizations for their commitment to workplace safety by presenting each of them with the 2019 KEMI Destiny Award. UofL Hospital was one of the organizations recognized.
The Destiny Awards are presented annually by KEMI to policyholders that best exemplify KEMI’s motto, “Control your own destiny.” The awards symbolize what can be accomplished when organizations work together to improve workplace safety. Policyholders who earn the KEMI Destiny Award effectively demonstrate to KEMI their ability to manage a formal safety program, provide on-site training and regular safety meetings for employees, and display an ongoing commitment to safety from all levels throughout their organizations.
The initial Destiny Award criteria requires that policyholders are in KEMI’s Preferred Tier, have premium greater than $30,000, maintain an experience modifier of 0.80 or below, maintain a loss ratio of 45% or below, and are insured by KEMI for three or more consecutive years. This narrowed the field from around 23,500 policyholders to 39. We then sent a brief questionnaire to our contacts at these businesses asking that they give us some information about why they feel they deserve the award. From the list of 39 we selected 24 policyholders that we felt truly deserved the award.
The award is not an easy award to win. Key factors include upper management support of safety and safety initiatives, management team that works with KEMI to effectively manage claims and the safety program, promotion of safety throughout the organization, and employees that understand the importance of working safely and do so day in and day out. Everyone in the organization plays a significant role in achieving the benchmarks necessary to be considered for the award.
