UofL Health – Brown Cancer Center and the Kentucky Cancer Program will celebrate National Cancer Survivors Day, Sunday, June 7 with a Drive-Thru celebration at Cardinal Stadium from 3-4 p.m.
National Cancer Survivors Day is celebrated the first Sunday in June and is meant to demonstrate that life after a cancer diagnosis can be a reality. This is evidenced by the 14,000 survivors Brown Cancer Center’s cancer registry team has followed up with dating back to 1995 — for some that’s 25 years of survivorship.
Whitney Pitman, manager of the Survivorship Program at Brown Cancer Center, says, “An individual is considered a cancer survivor from the time of their initial diagnosis of cancer throughout the duration of their life.” You don’t have to be declared “cancer free” in order to be considered a survivor. “Family members and friends of those affected by cancer can also be considered survivors.”
Cancer patients and other cancer survivors are invited to decorate their cars and masks, then drive through the stadium parking lot for a parade of ALL cancer patients and survivors. A panel of judges will rank their favorites and award prizes. Everyone must remain in their cars to help keep everyone safe.
There will be a red carpet recognition of survivors, swag bags for each car, music by J.D. Shelburne, and other special guest appearances.
