Colon cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. The good news is that when detected early, colon cancer is up to 90% curable.
To encourage preventative screening for colorectal cancer, UofL Health – Mary & Elizabeth Hospital along with UofL Physicians – Louisville Surgical Associates are pleased to announce the addition of Saturday scheduling to offer a convenient option for patients to be screened. Screening colonoscopies are fast, pain-free and patients are usually able to leave in under an hour. The procedure is routinely covered by most insurance plans as a preventative benefit.
Colorectal cancer occurs most often in men and women age 50 and older. By age 50, both men and women with average risk of colon cancer should be screened. Individuals with a family history of the disease or with symptoms should be screened sooner. One in five people diagnosed with colorectal cancer are between the ages of 20 and 54. In fact, individuals born after 1990 have twice the risk of colon cancer, and four times the risk of rectal cancer.
